Dubai to host first World Drone Prix in 2016


Abu Dhabi has the Formula One Grand Prix each year and now Dubai is to go one better with the introduction of cool racing event.

The World Drone Prix will take place next year for the first time and $1million (Dhs3,672,850) in prizemoney is up for grabs.

March 10 will see the opening event in the evening and the following day is set to have freestyle and track races. Teams will practice in Dubai on March 9 in preparation for the real thing.The news was announced by Minister of Cabinet Affairs Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, on Saturday, the final day of the World Air Games at Skydive Dubai. 

Speaking at the Palm drop zone he explained that occasion will be the “biggest race of its kind” and that they are “pushing the boundary of drone technology until it becomes the reality of transport in the future”.

In order to take part teams must have one pilot, a navigator, team leader, pit-stop technician and someone in charge of the pit-stop.

World Organisation for Racing Drones is the governing body and will be in charge of giving other cities the right to host in future.

Qualifiers around the globe begin January 1 and in order to get to Dubai the teams must place top three in races of 15 or more from their part of the world.


Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai is directing the World Drone Prix and posted on his Instagram account @faz3, alongside a teaser video: “The future @worlddroneprix.”


The clip shows drones flying past famous Dubai monuments such as the Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, and Atlantis.
